Emsworth is a small harbour town on the Hampshire-Sussex border, tucked into the north-eastern corner of Chichester Harbour. It has been a fishing and trading settlement for centuries, and the town's relationship with the sea is evident in its waterfront, its boatyards, and the network of tidal channels that wind through the harbour around it. Emsworth was once famous for its oyster beds, which thrived in the harbour's sheltered waters until pollution and disease reduced the fishery in the early twentieth century. The town centre is a conservation area of considerable charm, with a mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings along the High Street, Queen Street, and the lanes running down to the millpond. The millpond, fed by the River Ems, sits at the heart of the town and is overlooked by the old flour mill, now converted to residential use. Independent shops, galleries, cafes, and pubs give Emsworth a lively character that draws visitors from across the region. Chichester Harbour, which surrounds Emsworth on three sides, is one of the finest natural harbours in southern England and is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The harbour's channels, saltmarshes, and mudflats support exceptional populations of birds, and the shoreline walks from Emsworth around to Langstone and Thorney Island are among the best coastal walks in Hampshire. The harbour is also popular with sailors, and several sailing clubs operate from the Emsworth waterfront. Emsworth sits on the A259 coast road and is served by Emsworth railway station on the Coastway line between Portsmouth and Brighton. The town falls within the borough of Havant but has a strong independent identity, reinforced by the annual Emsworth Show, the British Food Fortnight events, and an active community of artists and makers.
