Hill Head

Quiet coastal village at the mouth of the River Meon, a gateway to Titchfield Haven nature reserve

Hill Head is a small coastal village on the Solent shore between Lee-on-the-Solent and Titchfield, within the borough of Fareham. It sits where the River Meon reaches the sea through a narrow harbour, and the combination of shingle beach, river mouth, and the adjacent Titchfield Haven nature reserve gives it a character quite different from its larger neighbours. The village developed modestly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, largely as a quiet retreat for families drawn by the coast. Hill Head harbour is a small tidal inlet used by fishing boats and small pleasure craft. At low tide the harbour dries out, revealing mud and shingle, and the foreshore is a good spot for birdwatching as waders feed along the water's edge. The beach runs west towards Titchfield Haven and east towards the long seafront of Lee-on-the-Solent, and the Solent Way passes through along the coast path. Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, immediately to the west of the village, is one of the most important wetland sites in Hampshire. The reserve occupies the former tidal estuary of the Meon, now a freshwater and brackish wetland of reedbeds, lagoons, and wet meadows. It is a key site for migrating and breeding birds, and the visitor centre and hides are accessible from Cliff Road at the western edge of the village. Hill Head has a small community of residents, a pub, and a sailing club. The village is popular with walkers and birdwatchers, and the coast here offers some of the best views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.
