The Solent

Historic strait between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, renowned for sailing, shipping, and coastal wildlife

The Solent is the strait separating the Isle of Wight from the mainland of Hampshire and the south coast of England. It runs roughly east to west for about twenty miles, from its junction with Spithead at the eastern end to the open waters of the western Solent and Christchurch Bay. At its narrowest, between Hurst Castle and the western tip of the Isle of Wight, it is barely a mile wide. At its broadest, the Solent opens to several miles across. The Solent is one of the busiest stretches of water in the world. Commercial shipping passes through on its way to and from the port of Southampton, one of the largest container and cruise ports in Europe. Cross-Solent ferries run frequent services between the mainland and the Isle of Wight, operating from Portsmouth, Southampton, and Lymington. The waterway is also one of the most famous sailing grounds in the world, home to Cowes Week and dozens of sailing clubs along both shores. The tidal regime of the Solent is unusual, with a double high tide caused by the island's position and the way tidal streams enter from both ends. This extended high water was historically an advantage for sailing vessels and remains a feature that benefits the port of Southampton. The Solent's shoreline supports a rich variety of habitats, from saltmarsh and mudflat to shingle beach and soft cliff. Several sites along the coast are designated as nature reserves or Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and the area is important for overwintering birds, marine mammals, and seagrass beds. The Solent Way, a sixty-mile walking trail, follows the Hampshire shore from Milford on Sea to Emsworth, passing through many of the towns and villages covered by the Solent News network.
