Airport Connections from the Solent

Getting to and from airports near the Solent region

The Solent region is well placed for access to several airports, with Southampton Airport the closest and London airports reachable within two hours by road or rail. Knowing the options and journey times helps when planning travel from the Hampshire coast.

Southampton Airport is the nearest airport to the Solent area, located at Eastleigh, roughly fifteen miles from Fareham and twenty miles from Gosport. The airport is small by national standards but offers scheduled flights to domestic and European destinations including Edinburgh, Manchester, Dublin, Jersey, and a selection of holiday routes. It is served by its own railway station, Southampton Airport Parkway, which has regular trains from Fareham (about twenty minutes) and Portsmouth (about forty minutes via Fareham). By road, the airport is reached via the M27 westbound to Junction 5, with a journey time from Fareham of around twenty to twenty-five minutes outside peak hours. The airport has on-site parking and a drop-off area close to the terminal.

London Gatwick is the most commonly used London airport for Solent residents, particularly for long-haul flights and a wider range of European destinations. Gatwick is roughly seventy miles from Fareham by road, reachable via the A27, A3(M), and M23, with a driving time of around ninety minutes in good traffic. By rail, the most direct route runs from Portsmouth or Fareham via the South Western Railway or Southern services to Gatwick Airport station, with a journey time of around two hours including any changes. The Gatwick Express from London Victoria does not serve the south coast directly, so most travellers from the Solent change at Barnham or take a through service on the coastway line.

London Heathrow is roughly eighty miles from the Solent, reachable by car via the M3 and M25 in around ninety minutes to two hours depending on traffic around the M25. There is no direct rail service from the Solent to Heathrow; most travellers drive or use the National Express coach service from Southampton or Portsmouth, which runs several times daily and takes around two hours.

Bournemouth Airport, to the west, handles a limited range of scheduled and charter flights and is about forty-five miles from Fareham. It is mainly used for holiday flights to Mediterranean destinations. There is no direct rail link, and most travellers drive via the M27 and A338.

For those travelling from the Isle of Wight, the journey to any airport adds the ferry crossing time and the need to connect with mainland transport. Foot passengers heading to Southampton Airport can take the Red Jet to Southampton and then a taxi or train to the airport. Car passengers taking the Wightlink ferry to Portsmouth can reach Gatwick via the A3(M) and M23, or Southampton Airport via the M27.

Coach services from Portsmouth, Southampton, and Fareham connect to Heathrow and Gatwick, and are often cheaper than rail, though journey times can be longer and less predictable. Several private transfer and taxi companies in the Solent area offer airport transfers at fixed prices.

For those driving to airports, meet-and-greet parking services are available at all the major airports and can remove the stress of navigating airport car parks. Comparison websites allow travellers to compare parking options and prices. The choice of airport often comes down to the destination: Southampton for domestic and short European flights, Gatwick for the widest range of scheduled and charter routes, and Heathrow for long-haul connections.
