Getting Around the Solent Area
Getting Around the Solent Area
The Solent area of Hampshire is compact enough that most journeys between towns take less than half an hour by car, but traffic congestion on the main routes can add significantly to journey times during peak hours. Knowing the transport options helps, whether you are commuting, visiting, or exploring the area.
By road, the M27 motorway runs east to west along the northern edge of the area, connecting Southampton, Fareham, and Portsmouth. Junctions 9 to 12 serve Fareham, Portchester, and the routes south to Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent. The A32 runs south from the M27 through Fareham to Gosport, and is the main road corridor for the peninsula. This road is heavily used at commuter times, and queues at the Quay Street roundabout in Fareham are a familiar frustration for regular travellers.
By rail, Fareham and Portchester both have stations on the main South Western Railway line between Southampton and Portsmouth. Services run roughly every fifteen minutes during the day, with journey times of about twenty minutes to Portsmouth and thirty-five minutes to Southampton. Fareham is also the junction for the branch line to Eastleigh via Botley, useful for reaching Winchester and connecting to London services. For more on Fareham's transport links, see fareham.news. For Portchester station information, visit portchester.news.
Gosport lost its railway in 1953 when the branch line from Fareham was closed. The trackbed has since been converted into a cycleway and footpath, but the town remains dependent on road and bus connections. There have been periodic proposals to reinstate the line or introduce a light rail service, but none has progressed beyond the study stage.
Bus services connect all the main towns. First Hampshire and Dorset operate the most frequent routes, including services between Fareham and Gosport along the A32 corridor, and between Fareham, Stubbington, and Lee-on-the-Solent. Services are most frequent during the day on weekdays and reduce in the evenings and at weekends. Timetable information is available at bus stops and online.
The Gosport Ferry provides a quick crossing of Portsmouth Harbour for foot passengers and cyclists, running every few minutes during the day from early morning until late evening. It connects Gosport directly to Portsmouth Harbour station, the Hard interchange, and the Gunwharf Quays area, making it a vital link for commuters and visitors.
Cycling infrastructure has improved in recent years, with shared-use paths along the Gosport to Fareham corridor and sections of the National Cycle Network passing through the area. The old railway line between Gosport and Fareham is now a well-used traffic-free route.
