Theatres and Entertainment Across the Solent

Live performance, cinema, and nightlife in the region

The Solent region has a varied entertainment scene, with theatres, cinemas, music venues, and comedy nights spread across its cities and towns. While it cannot match London for scale or choice, the area supports a healthy mix of professional and amateur performance, and residents have access to quality entertainment without needing to travel far.

The Kings Theatre in Southsea is one of the architectural and cultural highlights of the region. Opened in 1907, the Edwardian theatre seats around 1,600 and hosts a programme of touring musicals, plays, comedy, and pantomime. The theatre was saved from demolition in the 1990s by a community campaign and is now run as a charitable trust. Its interior, with ornate plasterwork and a traditional proscenium stage, provides a grand setting for everything from West End touring productions to local amateur shows.

The New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, in the Guildhall Walk area, is a smaller venue with a more intimate atmosphere, programming a mix of drama, comedy, dance, and fringe productions. Portsmouth Guildhall, a larger concert and events venue in the city centre, hosts touring rock and pop acts, orchestral concerts, and large-scale events. The Guildhall's main auditorium seats around 2,500 and has recently been refurbished.

In Southampton, the Mayflower Theatre is the largest theatre in the region, with over 2,300 seats and a programme of West End musicals, ballet, opera, and touring drama. Major productions often visit the Mayflower before or after London runs. The Nuffield Southampton Theatres (now part of the NST organisation) focuses on new writing and more experimental work, providing a counterpoint to the Mayflower's mainstream programme.

Chichester Festival Theatre, though technically in West Sussex, is within easy reach of the eastern Solent and has a national reputation for the quality of its productions. Founded by Laurence Olivier in 1962, the festival season runs from spring to autumn and regularly transfers productions to the West End. The Minerva Theatre, an adjacent smaller studio space, stages more intimate and contemporary work.

Closer to the Solent News heartland, entertainment options include the Ferneham Hall in Fareham (currently being rebuilt as a new arts and entertainment venue), which has historically provided a programme of live music, comedy, and community events. Gosport's cultural venues are smaller in scale, but the town has an active amateur dramatic society and community events at various venues. See fareham.news and gosport.news for local listings.

Cinemas in the area include the multiplex at Whiteley Shopping Centre near Fareham, the Vue cinema at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, and independent and community cinemas that show arthouse and classic films. The Commodore cinema in Ryde on the Isle of Wight is a much-loved independent picture house.

Live music venues range from pub back rooms hosting local bands to larger spaces in Portsmouth and Southampton that attract touring acts. The Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea is a well-known independent music venue that has hosted many bands on the way up. The region's nightlife is concentrated in Portsmouth (Guildhall Walk and Southsea) and Southampton (Above Bar and the Oxford Street quarter), with smaller towns offering pubs with live music and occasional club nights.
