The University of Portsmouth and Higher Education

University life and higher education in the Solent region

The University of Portsmouth is the largest higher education institution in the Solent area, with a student population of over 25,000 and a campus that occupies much of the Guildhall area of Portsmouth city centre. The university has a significant impact on the city and the wider region, both as an employer and as a driver of the local economy, culture, and housing market.

The university traces its origins to 1869 and the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art. It gained university status in 1992 as part of the national conversion of polytechnics to universities. Since then, it has grown steadily and invested heavily in its campus, with new buildings for science, technology, and the creative industries joining the older stock of the original polytechnic.

Portsmouth's strengths include cosmology and astrophysics, where its Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation has an international reputation, dental hygiene and dental therapy, pharmacy, and creative and cultural industries. The university's School of Architecture is based in the city centre, and its students contribute to the ongoing conversation about how Portsmouth's built environment should develop. The business school, law school, and engineering faculty all serve the regional economy, producing graduates who often stay in the Solent area to work.

The student population has a visible impact on Southsea and the surrounding areas. The demand for student housing has transformed parts of the city, with many Victorian terraced houses converted into shared student accommodation. The Article 4 direction introduced by Portsmouth City Council restricts further conversions in some areas, aiming to maintain a balance between student and family housing. The presence of students supports a lively night-time economy, independent cafes, and cultural venues, though it also generates tensions around noise, parking, and the character of residential streets.

Solent University, based in Southampton, is the other major university in the immediate Solent area. Formerly Southampton Institute and then Southampton Solent University, it was renamed Solent University in 2018. It has a particular strength in maritime education, fashion, sport, and media, and its campus sits close to Southampton's city centre and waterfront. The university's Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering, at the mouth of the Hamble, is one of the leading maritime training centres in the world.

The University of Southampton, while further from the coast, is one of the leading research universities in the country and has a significant presence in the region. Its Southampton campus is about thirty minutes from Fareham by train, and its graduates and staff contribute to the scientific, medical, and technological capacity of the wider Solent area. The university's National Oceanography Centre at the waterfront studies the very waters that define the Solent region.

For residents of the Solent area, the universities offer public lectures, cultural events, sports facilities, and continuing education courses. The libraries, galleries, and theatres associated with the universities enrich the cultural life of both cities.

The economic contribution of the universities to the Solent region is substantial. The University of Portsmouth alone generates hundreds of millions of pounds of economic output each year through staff salaries, student spending, research contracts, and supply chain activity. Many graduates choose to remain in the area after completing their studies, contributing to the local workforce in healthcare, education, engineering, creative industries, and the public sector. The universities also support spin-out companies and technology transfer, with research from Portsmouth and Southampton finding commercial applications in marine technology, environmental science, and digital industries.
