Fort Nelson
undefined, Solent News
Fort Nelson is one of the Palmerston Forts built along the crest of Portsdown Hill in the 1860s to defend Portsmouth Dockyard from a land attack from the north. The fort is now home to the Royal Armouries' collection of artillery, one of the finest collections of guns, cannons, and ordnance in the world, spanning over six centuries of warfare. The fort itself is a substantial Victorian fortification with deep ditches, tunnels, magazines, and barracks arranged around a central parade ground. Visitors can explore the underground passages, walk the ramparts with their panoramic views across Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, and examine artillery pieces ranging from medieval bombards to a modern supergun barrel confiscated from Iraq. Fort Nelson is free to visit and hosts regular firing demonstrations, re-enactment events, and family activities. It is the only Royal Armouries site outside the Tower of London and Leeds, and its hilltop position makes the views alone worth the visit.
