The Royal Submarine Museum on Gosport's Haslar waterfront tells the story of the Royal Navy's submarine service from its earliest experiments to the nuclear age. The centrepiece is HMS Alliance, a Second World War-era submarine that has been fully restored and opened as a walk-through exhibit. Visitors can explore the entire boat, from the torpedo room to the control room, and experience the confined conditions in which submariners lived and fought. HMS Alliance was built in 1945 and served in the Royal Navy until 1973. She is the only surviving example of a British submarine from the Second World War era and is listed as part of the National Historic Fleet. The surrounding museum galleries cover the development of submarine warfare, the lives of submariners, and the technology that allowed boats to operate beneath the surface. The museum sits on the Millennium Promenade, which runs along the harbour shore from the Gosport Ferry terminal. It is part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and can be visited as part of a combined ticket with the Historic Dockyard across the harbour.
