The SeaCity Museum in Southampton tells the story of the city's deep relationship with the sea, with a particular focus on the Titanic and the Southampton community that crewed her. The museum is housed in a striking Art Deco building opposite the Civic Centre in the heart of the city, and opened in 2012 to coincide with the centenary of the Titanic disaster. The Titanic gallery explores the ship's connection to Southampton, from which she departed on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912. Of the 897 crew members, over 700 were from Southampton, and the loss of 549 of them devastated entire streets and neighbourhoods. The exhibition uses personal stories, original artefacts, and interactive displays to bring the human cost of the disaster into focus. The museum's second permanent gallery, Gateway to the World, traces Southampton's maritime history from its origins as a Saxon trading port through the medieval wool trade, the Mayflower's departure in 1620, and the city's role as Britain's premier passenger port in the age of ocean liners. Temporary exhibitions and community displays complement the permanent collections.
