The Needles are a row of three distinctive chalk stacks rising from the sea at the western tip of the Isle of Wight, forming one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the south coast of England. The stacks are the eroded remnants of a chalk ridge that once connected the Isle of Wight to the Dorset coast, and they mark the point where the Solent meets the open waters of the English Channel. The Needles Lighthouse, a red and white striped tower built in 1859 by Trinity House, stands on the outermost rock and remains operational. The Old Battery, a Victorian fort perched on the clifftop above, is managed by the National Trust and offers dramatic views down to the rocks and across to Hurst Castle on the mainland. The New Battery, further along the headland, was used during the Cold War as a rocket-testing site and has an exhibition on the Black Knight and Black Arrow programmes. The coloured sand cliffs of Alum Bay, immediately to the east of the Needles, are another celebrated feature, with bands of red, orange, yellow, and white sand visible in the cliff face. A chairlift descends to the beach, and the Needles Landmark Attraction at the clifftop offers family amusements and panoramic views.
