A32 (Gosport Road)
Street guide, Solent News
The A32 is the primary north-south route connecting Fareham to Gosport, running from junction 11 of the M27 southward through Fareham town centre, across the head of Fareham Creek, and down the Gosport peninsula to the town centre. It is one of the busiest A-roads in Hampshire, carrying the vast majority of traffic into and out of Gosport, which has no rail link and limited alternative road access. North of Fareham, the A32 continues through the Meon Valley toward Wickham and on to Alton, passing through attractive downland countryside. This northern section is a quieter, winding road popular with cyclists, quite different in character from the congested urban stretch south of the M27. Traffic on the Fareham to Gosport section has been a longstanding issue, with the road often gridlocked at peak times. The Stubbington bypass, opened in 2024, was designed in part to relieve pressure on this corridor. The road passes Quay Street roundabout in Fareham, one of the area's most notorious congestion points, before heading south past the Brockhurst roundabout into Gosport.
