Isle of Wight Festival draws 600,000
undefined
The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival attracted an estimated 600,000 people, making it one of the largest music events in history. Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors, and Joan Baez were among the performers. The sheer scale of the event overwhelmed the island's infrastructure and led to the Isle of Wight County Council Act 1971, which restricted the holding of large gatherings without a licence. The festival was revived in 2002 and continues annually as a major music event.
