Fishbourne Roman Palace discovered
undefined
In 1960, a workman digging a water-main trench at Fishbourne struck Roman remains, leading to the discovery of the largest Roman residential building in Britain. The excavation, directed by Barry Cunliffe, revealed a palatial complex with mosaic floors, underfloor heating, and a formal garden. The discovery transformed understanding of Roman Britain and established Fishbourne as one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Europe.
