The A3023 is the only road on and off Hayling Island, crossing the bridge at Langstone and running south through the island to the seafront. The road carries all vehicle traffic for the island's population of around 17,000, and the bridge can become a significant bottleneck at peak times and during summer weekends. The single bridge crossing is a defining feature of Hayling Island life, creating both the island's distinct character and its main transport frustration.
