Eastern Road

Street guide, Solent News

Eastern Road is one of the three main road routes onto Portsea Island, running along the eastern side of the island from the A27/A2030 junction at Farlington down to the Great Salterns area and onward toward Eastney. It is a dual carriageway for much of its length and carries heavy traffic, particularly at commuter times. The road runs alongside Langstone Harbour, an internationally designated nature site, and crosses the narrow strip of land between the harbour and the built-up area of Portsmouth. Views across the mudflats and harbour are a feature of the drive, particularly at low tide when wading birds gather in large numbers. The road also passes near the Eastern Road allotments and several sports grounds. Eastern Road is a vital part of the Portsmouth transport network. It provides an alternative route into the city when the M275 or the A3 through Cosham is congested, and it serves the large residential areas of Milton, Baffins, and Copnor on the eastern side of the island. Bus services run along its length, and it connects with the A2030 to provide access to Southsea and the seafront. Flooding and high tides occasionally affect the lowest-lying sections near Langstone Harbour.
