Fareham Road, Gosport
Street guide, Solent News
Fareham Road is the main route through the northern part of Gosport, running from the Brockhurst area toward Gosport town centre. It is part of the A32 corridor and carries heavy traffic as one of the principal routes through the town. The road passes through mixed residential and commercial areas, with housing from various periods lining both sides. The road connects the Brockhurst roundabout, where traffic from Fareham and Newgate Lane enters Gosport, with the town centre. Along its length it passes near several important local landmarks including Brockhurst Gate and the remains of the Gosport Lines, the defensive works that once protected the approaches to the town. Schools, shops, and community facilities front onto the road. Fareham Road reflects the character of much of Gosport: a town with deep naval and military heritage overlaid with mid-twentieth-century development. The road is functional rather than scenic, but it is the backbone of Gosport's road network on the northern side of the town. Traffic management and congestion have been persistent issues, particularly at the Brockhurst roundabout and the approach to the town centre, where the road narrows and meets other routes.
