Hamble Lane

Street guide, Solent News

Hamble Lane is the only road route into and out of Hamble-le-Rice, running south from the M27 junction 8 area through Bursledon and Hound to the village of Hamble on the River Hamble estuary. This single-road access is one of the defining features of the village's character and one of its biggest transport challenges. The road passes through a variety of landscapes: from the motorway junction through suburban Bursledon, past boatyards and marina entrances, and into the increasingly rural and maritime setting of Hamble itself. The River Hamble, one of the premier sailing rivers on the south coast, is the road's ultimate destination, and the lane serves marinas, sailing clubs, chandleries, and the village itself. Hamble Lane is notoriously congested at peak times, particularly the northern section near the M27 junction and through Bursledon. With all traffic for Hamble, its marinas, and the oil terminal at Hamble Point using this single road, queues can be long. Various improvement schemes have been proposed and debated over the years. Despite the traffic, the drive down Hamble Lane is the gateway to one of the most attractive villages on the Solent, and the transition from motorway to estuary is one of the area's most distinctive journeys.
