High Street and West Street, Fareham

Street guide, Solent News

Fareham's High Street and its westward continuation, West Street, form the historic commercial heart of the town. The High Street runs from the junction near the railway station westward to the Holy Trinity Church area, with West Street continuing beyond. The street is partly pedestrianised and features a mix of national chains, independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. The buildings along the High Street include several fine Georgian and Victorian facades, particularly at the western end near West Street, where Fareham's architectural heritage is most evident. The town has a tradition of Georgian brick buildings that gives it a distinctive character among south Hampshire towns. West Street in particular retains several listed buildings and a sense of its eighteenth-century origins. Fareham's High Street has faced the same challenges as many English town centres, with competition from out-of-town retail parks and online shopping. However, the market held regularly in the street and the presence of independent businesses alongside chains give it ongoing vitality. The street connects with the shopping centre to the north and with routes south toward Fareham Creek and the Quay. It remains the focal point of town life and community events.
