Gosport High Street runs from the ferry terminal and bus station at the harbour end northward through the town centre. It is a pedestrianised shopping street for much of its length and serves as the main commercial thoroughfare of the town. The street connects the waterfront, with its views across to Portsmouth, to the residential areas further north. The High Street has a long history as a market town centre, though like many similar streets it has struggled in recent decades with shop vacancies and competition from larger centres. Efforts at regeneration have brought some new businesses and improvements to the public realm. The southern end, near the ferry terminal, benefits from passing trade from commuters and visitors using the Gosport Ferry. At its harbour end, the High Street opens onto views of Portsmouth Harbour and the Millennium Promenade, one of Gosport's most attractive features. The Falkland Gardens, commemorating the Falklands War, are nearby. The street's market heritage continues with regular markets. For a town of its size, Gosport's High Street retains a community feel, with local traders and regulars giving it a character that distinguishes it from more anonymous retail environments.
