Newgate Lane

Street guide, Solent News

Newgate Lane runs north-south between Fareham and Gosport, parallel to and west of the A32. For years it served as an alternative route for traffic trying to avoid the congested A32, though Newgate Lane itself became increasingly congested as housing grew in the area. The road passes through largely open countryside between the western edge of Fareham and the northern outskirts of Gosport. The Newgate Lane bypass, completed in stages, was built to relieve congestion on the original road and to support the Stubbington bypass connection. The new road runs to the west of the old lane and provides a faster, more direct route. The original Newgate Lane remains in use for local access to properties and farms along its length. Newgate Lane is a road that has been at the centre of transport debates in the Fareham and Gosport area for decades. The lack of a direct motorway or fast road link to Gosport has been a longstanding issue, and Newgate Lane improvements were seen as part of the solution. The road crosses the Fareham-Gosport boundary and connects with the wider road network at roundabouts at both ends. It passes near the site of the former HMS Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-the-Solent.
