Portsdown Hill Road
Street guide, Solent News
Portsdown Hill Road runs along the chalk ridge of Portsdown Hill, north of Portsmouth and Fareham, offering what many consider to be the finest panoramic views on the south coast. From this elevated road, the entire Solent region is laid out below: Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth Harbour, Langstone Harbour, the Isle of Wight, and on clear days the Dorset coast and the South Downs. The road connects several Napoleonic-era forts built along the ridge, including Fort Nelson (home to the Royal Armouries collection of artillery), Fort Southwick, and Fort Widley. These forts were constructed in the 1860s as part of the defences against a feared French invasion and are known as Palmerston's Follies. The road between them is a popular spot for walkers, cyclists, and people simply enjoying the view. Portsdown Hill Road is not a fast route and is not designed for heavy traffic, but it carries a steady flow of local traffic between Portchester and the villages north of Portsmouth. It is a favourite spot for watching the comings and goings in Portsmouth Harbour, from aircraft carriers to fishing boats. At night, the views of the city lights below are spectacular. Parking laybys along the road are well used.
