The Hard, Portsmouth

Street guide, Solent News

The Hard is the waterfront road in the Portsea area of Portsmouth, running along the western side of Portsea Island adjacent to Portsmouth Harbour station, the Historic Dockyard, and the harbour itself. It is one of the most historically significant streets in Portsmouth, serving as the main approach to the dockyard gates for centuries. The road takes its name from the hard, firm landing area where boats could be beached at low tide. Today it is dominated by the transport interchange, with Portsmouth Harbour railway station, the Gosport ferry terminal, and bus stops all clustered together. The entrance to the Historic Dockyard, home to HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, and HMS Warrior, is directly off The Hard. The Hard has seen significant regeneration, with new buildings, improved public spaces, and better pedestrian connections. The Aspex Gallery, University of Portsmouth buildings, and various cafes and restaurants have brought new life to the area. Despite its modern makeover, The Hard retains its essential character as a working waterfront, with views across the harbour to Gosport and the constant movement of ferries, naval vessels, and leisure craft. It is the first impression of Portsmouth for many visitors arriving by train.
