Bognor receives the 'Regis' suffix

undefined

In 1929, King George V convalesced at Craigweil House in Bognor after a serious illness. In gratitude, the King granted the town permission to add 'Regis' (meaning 'of the King') to its name, making it Bognor Regis. The town had been a seaside resort since the late eighteenth century, developed by Sir Richard Hotham, and the royal connection boosted its profile. The granting of the suffix was one of only a handful of such honours in English history.
